5 mg of Focalin XR made me very jittery and excited and also triggered migraines. Also severe dry mouth and throat. I’m not sure if I even want to try another med after such bad side effects on such a low dose. Has this happened to anyone else?

there are number of stimulant based ADHD meds as they are the most effective, but each one has side effects and it is a matter of finding the one which causes the least side effects, and finding the right dose.
Different stimulants affect different people in different ways! For example, the lowest dose of Ritalin gave me horribly intense headaches and other side effects, yet the highest dose of Concerta was barely even noticeable, even though they have the same active ingredient. I say keep trying every med you possibly can until you hopefully find one that works!

finding the right medication is a journey that takes time so try not to let yourself become discouraged. you'll find the best way for *you*, if you persist in trying things.
Strattera is another popular non-stim but it it is known for having strong side effects for the first few weeks of the treatment and this scares off a lot of people. The people I know who had mild side effects, or simply stuck through it, said it is the best medication they've used
Wellbutrin is a non-stim which is quite popular in ADHD treatment, but it is usually paired with stimulants because it isn't always enough.
there are also non-stimulant medications which are sometimes prescribed by themselves or paired with stimulants
XR versions of these drugs tend to have a smoother effect. Vyvanse is one of the newest and is considered by many to be the smoothest of them all, but because of it's relative newness insurance companies don't always cover it
I would try Vyvanse. Completely different creature! It's worked beautifully for me. Did not like focalin either!
I have never taken it, but when I first tried my meds I was jittery, amped up and sweating after a few more times of taking it my body got used to it and the help I get from the meds isn’t showing those symptoms. You should talk with your doctor to see what they recommend.
Never taken it
