Hi! I realized I was autistic not too long ago, and I’ve been doing my best to accept that I am and unmask as much as possible. It’s felt really good to finally truly understand myself. As far as achievements go, I’m starting my third semester of college soon! The adjustment isn’t going to be easy, but I’m looking forward to 2 classes about one of my special interests, as well as an ASL class that I hope will help me communicate when I’m nonverbal!

I've always been autistic (high functioning aspergers). Its never really bothered me much, I kinda just see it as my personality and everyone I know accepts me, just that I'm a little different

I am, hi! It's nice to meet you :] I'm working on my relationship with food (I don't have an eating disorder, but I restrict myself heavily on how much I eat based on past experiences) and working on unmasking at least in front of my partner. The food thing was assessed and handled yesterday, and now I'm more comfortable eating actual full meals instead of things like a singular bowl of nuked mac and cheese, and the unmasking thing is going well, I'm stimming a lot more which I know isn't the entire process, but it's getting somewhere! I'd love to hear your strengths, struggles, etc, Meari and anyone else's!

@Gwynheimer I’d say that my biggest challenge is my job, and my biggest achievement is learning when I need alone time and communicating it with my boyfriend

i think the main thing for me was getting diagnosed in my early twenties, because after that my whole life beforehand started to make so much sense. i've always had horrible social anxiety and just trouble talking to people in general. and i guess i came off as really weird to everyone else? i don't know it's a long story lol but it's been years since i found out and life is a lot easier when i understand how my own brain works. i used to think that i was just,, broken i guess? i still struggle with a lot of things, especially socially, but i'm on anxiety meds now that help a lot so i'm trying to talk to/meet more people now. and mental health is a special interest of mine, so i've absorbed as much knowledge about autism as i could so now i can help other people struggling to understand it

Im autistic! I’ve been struggling with antisociality and being severely lonely recently but I’ve been better at unmasking and stimming in public :D!

@J.ello Nice, good to hear that! I really used to struggle with loneliness until I wound up finding a boyfriend without even looking too hard - I feel I was really fortunate! Maybe this app can help you with loneliness? I’m currently trying hard to unmask as much as possible, but it’s really hard because of my job - I’m glad you’re managing to do it though!

Me too I've been working on communicating with people effectively for the past 1.5 years. It's going well and is very interesting I started with my mum as someone more likely to be patient and understanding then slowly branched out to family and friends A lot of the learning has involved asking blunt questions and saying things like "I don't mean that in a critical way, I'm trying to establish the facts" and "I mean what I said and nothing more, there is no undertone to my words". I also ask my mum for translations a lot because she says one thing and means another. For example she would say "would you like to walk in the sun over there" while on a walk together and I would ask "do you mean that you want to walk in the sun because you are cold". So it's like learning a new language that everyone else speaks

@Electric.Sheep that’s very interesting! I find that, quite uniquely I think, I have a good grasp of undertones and figurative language because of my interest in languages! It’s all learned though, I can feel I haven’t got it naturally in me to understand that

@Bean69 One Of My Biggest Struggles Is Communication Because I’m Non-Verbal Most Of The Time

        • Meari

          464d

@Bean69 That’s understandable! How do you tend to communicate day-to-day if you don’t mind me asking? I tend to go non-verbal when burnt out and needing to unmask desperately. I’ve been using an app called Leeloo to help me!

@Bean69 hi Bean! I’d love to hear about your recent successes! And if there haven’t been any for any reason, what about some challenges that need overcoming or things you’d like to achieve? 😊
