I didn't know whether to tag this with asd or anxiety but, does anyone else struggle rly hard to make friends? like I have fantastic friends but I never seem to be able to just go out and make them. I get so jealous because some people that struggle like me irl can go online and make all these online friends and I've never had that either. I feel too anxious or awkward anytime I try to make online friends, but all I want is a fun friend group online to chat with and call and play video games together. Idk how they do it. Also I've noticed anytime I do put myself out there nobody rly gets me and it makes me feel very.. alien? Like the majority of ppl around me are neurotypical and just like haha yeah my words off or just misunderstand my tone or anything else. Idk what I'm saying anymore but basically I'm 21 and desperate for authentic friends šŸ˜

I was just about to suggest discord. I actually am in a autism discord server right now that I wouldn't mind linking to you in a dm or something. I found that its the best out of all the servers I've been in for just... understanding me. Plus even though there are different channels, infodumping is allowed in every single one and the mods aren't overly strict in any anxiety inducing way. There are a few rules but I find that it is all fairly easy to follow and the mods are very nice if something is wrong

i struggle with making friends too! iā€™m autistic and have anxiety as well. i find itā€™s hard for me to make conversation with people, especially small talk. when i was in middle school, i had a lot of online friends, but iā€™ve since not had many. i donā€™t really put myself out there too much these days as iā€™ve become comfortable having a small circle of people who really understand me, but i 10000% understand feeling alienated when i do put myself out there in a social situation. try not to go into a social setting assuming thereā€™s already something noticeably different about you. there is nothing wrong with you, but when you worry about it, it can make you look unapproachable because a lot of times people who arenā€™t autistic or donā€™t have anxiety read the nerves or shyness as being closed off. relaxing and letting everything flow naturally is a learning curve especially with the autism/anxiety combo, but it works :)

Iā€™m in the same boat. Iā€™m 21 and I have two friends that Iā€™ve known most of my life and thatā€™s it. I donā€™t have an answer but youā€™re definitely not the only one

@Catbug If you ever want to talk i have no problem with awkwardness and will generate plenty myself, but i totally get it if not

Iā€™m also autistic and have anxiety but Iā€™m ok at making friends. I have trouble maintaining relationships though bc of my energy levels. gotta love burnout. my friends are understanding but i still feel bad bc iā€™m not as interactive as Iā€™d like to be. If any of yā€™all wanna make a groupchat somewhere that would be kinda cool. Weā€™re all in the same boat to some extent so weā€™d have a decent understanding of each other. Especially compared to a gc with a bunch of neurotypicals

I completely feel this. One of the only ways in the past I've been able to make friends was joining open discord servers and groups online and offline like that and even then I'd only feel comfortable in the process if I was one of the first people because it felt almost like they were the new ones entering my space. The problem with that method though is i tend to rely on structure and find that people tend to get bored when I talk about the same thing over and over again like I tend to do so once I did make the friends I'd either lose them once the group disolved or I would miss the subtle signs that they weren't my friend anymore. Some day I hope to find a group that will just stick with me or at least make it more clear if they are no longer my friend

I'm also autistic and I think this might be more of an autistic thing than an anxiety thing. I feel like we might get along. I saw you mention Zelda in another comment. I freaking love Zelda lol. Is it okay if I DM you?

I'm autistic too and i feel the exact same way, there's something so nice about finding people who are also autistic, it feels like someone really gets you when you find the right person.

what games do you play? i have a discord where i chat with my irl friends while i game, and I'm sure they would be happy to add a friend if we have any games in common!

@Cloudlight I've mostly been playing on my switch lately but lots of RPGs and story based stuff. Platformers are fun too

It's hard to connect with people particularly if we have a history of rejection or not fitting in. I'm trying to learn how to find other neurodivergent folx who I can socialize with and see who I want to invest in getting to know better.

Me! I struggle greatly with it as I have asd, anxiety and adhd. I've also been burned by more than a few people, online and off. But hey what games are you into? I'd be down to talk and see if we can be friends šŸ§”

@kennadryl I'm rly into Zelda, rpgs, anything with a great story I'm there. I have all the consoles I just mostly play on my switch because I play alone most days loll

me too! I find that it takes me really really long to warm up to people, so it's hard to make friends outside of something like school or work where I'm around the same people day after day. feel free to message me if you want to see if we would click (but I also suck a online friendships so I feel like I can't promise anything)
