Hello! My name is Syd and for a very very long time I’ve suffered from emetophobia (fear of vomiting) since I was 7-8 years old and because of that I’ve gained so many compulsive behaviors like repeating phrases, not wearing certain clothing, not taking medication, not sitting at certain spots and I haven’t even noticed after years of how much I’ve been doing it and how I do it everyday. Although it didn’t start to ruin my life until August of this year, ever since May of 2022 I’ve been having super painful abdominal pain and nausea in the past few months and all my doctors say is that it is constipation. I used to get constipated for a week then felt better for another week and it repeats like a cycle. But now those weeks that I feel better start lasting less than a week and I get constipated for more than a week. I went to the ER for this one time because the pain was really bad and they diagnosed me with Gastritis. I get really bloated/have a lot of gas sometimes and it can be very painful. And since I have emetophobia I’ve been trying everything to not feel sick but no matter what I do or what I try it never helps. I get scared a lot about eating or doing psychical activities because i’m afraid I will get sick. Like how I mentioned earlier, my compulsive behaviors didn’t start getting really bad until August of this year. I can’t stop repeating these phrases and that makes me think about throwing up non stop. Sometimes I could be super hungry and when I have food right in front of me I start feeling sick and nauseous because I’m terrified of what will happen and so I just don’t eat at all and because of this I have lost a lot of weight and I have 1-3 panic attacks daily. Or most of the time anything I eat makes me sick and now I don’t know what foods to avoid or what foods to eat because my doctors say one thing is bad/good for me and my parents say the exact opposite and now I’m just so confused. This stresses me out so much and it worsens how I’m already feeling from my gut. Sometimes I’m too afraid to go home because I feel like if I go home I’m going to start feeling nauseous and I don’t know who to talk to or what to do because my parents don’t speak much English and they try their best to understand me but sometimes I can’t explain to them how I’m feeling because I don’t speak much Spanish. I know they try their best to make me feel better but it never helps and I feel so horrible about myself because of it. School hasn’t really been a problem until this week, I usually feel better at school because it’s a huge distraction but now nothing has been helping besides going to hospitals. I really hope you can understand how I am feeling and if you can share something’s about yourself as well!!

@SmileySnail I have the exact same problem. I always feel hungry but too nauseous to eat, or one minute I could be hungry then the next I feel sick and it’s like a pattern. Or sometimes eating solid foods is difficult for me. I suggest starting off with liquids like yogurt, broth, smoothies, applesauce, oatmeal stuff like that. It has helped me a bit it’s just my anxiety that make’s me anxious about eating. I hope this helps!!

another thing for panic attacks- cold water on the wrists anf neck does work. if you live somewhere where it gets cold, sitting outside for a little bit may help too, and may also make you sleepy which i know calms me down. you can also freeze an orange, take it out when you’re anxious and press it to your neck and wrists, and then also you can scratch it as it thaws and the scent of it is nice and refreshing. one thing that has really helped me a lot is peppermint oil. i put a drop behind each ear, on the back and the front of my neck and also my wrists. peppermint is excellent for nausea, and usually it brings me down from a 10 to like a 5 or 6. which isn’t perfect, but it definitely is better than being at a 10. you can find it at whole foods or most grocery stores, but make sure it’s food grade before ingesting any

i feel your pain all too well!! i feel so much safer in the hospital because they manage my symptoms and somehow i feel safer if i were to get sick while i’m there. in my experience, constipation can seriously do a number on you. you may want to talk to your doctor about something like linzess, or maybe being on miralax pretty often to prevent constipation. neither of those will make you feel sick and they will help clear you out! i had that issue earlier this year and once i got the constipation under control i definitely felt much better. it’s also important to know that anxiety itself on top of emetophobia can cause a lot of nausea and while you really are feeling that nausea, you aren’t sick! throwing up is a very metabolically expensive action and your body is not going to put you through that action without a real cause. and i know that eating is hard but not eating makes you feel so much worse. stick with plain foods (i like uncrustables, honey nut cheerios, plain frozen yogurt, fruit, toast/bagels) and once you’re used to food again, it will be easier to branch out and eat things that you like again. i know it’s easy to convince yourself that food will make you sick, but if your constipation is under control it really shouldn’t! it may also be beneficial for you to get a food allergy panel. i did this and several foods popped up so i know now what i really should avoid vs. what i maybe have mental reservations about. i hope this helps, i’ve been struggling with this phobia since i was about 4 years old, feel free to come to me with any questions!

@dizzydarling that's all excellent advice. I'm having a hard time convincing myself food is OK - I'm nauseous when hungry, but a part of me says "can't throw up if there's nothing in me" and then I just don't eat. Do you have thoughts on a good way to challenge this?

@SmileySnail well first of all i’m sorry that this is going to be very candid, but i promise you it’s so much better to throw up on a full stomach than an empty stomach. sure it’s a little more gross but it is significantly less painful and difficult to do, and another thing to know is that if you’re truly going to get sick (which 99% of the time you’re not going to!) but if you are, you’re going to whether or not you’ve eaten something. so the best thing you can do is eat something, even just a snack like some dry cereal or chips or crackers because it’s either going to make you feel much less nauseous, or making getting sick much less painful on the off chance that it does happen!
