Does anyone else with autism have what most would consider a vocal stim, but it feels more like a vocal tic because you can't control it and it comes randomly? I control (almost, darn you shaking leg!) all my other stims, but this vocal thing that comes with a shiver is out of the blue and uncontrolled. I've had it for about 2 years now.

      Yea sometimes I'll make lil whimper noises and at the same time my body does a hiccup motion. But I'll also have random twitches in my legs, arms or head.

        @Leopuppy I hate random twitches

      I get shivers, makes my head turn sideways quick, some times it comes with a quick "hhhmm". My dad has severe ones where his physical response makes him jolt and he has to catch his balance again since it happens when he's stood up as well as sitting.

        @gummybearit OH MY GOD THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT MINE ARE (yours) only I make a little chirpy noise like a cat can make. I get a full body shiver and my head turns and I make the sound!

      Yeah it's actually pretty normal. I got lost in a rabbit hole about Tourette's and links to ADHD and since ADHD is linked pretty strongly to autism, there's been some ties. Not to mention, autistic stims on their own are always interesting. I make Perry the Platypus noises, pop my lips softly, and click my tongue with my mouth shut so mine aren't as vocal right now

        @Sevyn0Sevyn do you know if some stims can be uncontrollable if suppressed for too long? Or as you said, a form of Tourette's (but with the body?)

      I don't have a vocal one, but I do have a tremor and sometimes jerk like motions with my limbs, neck and voice when talking. It has gone undiagnosed as a mystery but since I have been diagnosed on the spectrum this past summer, I have wondered if it is related to an uncontrolled stim or overwhelm

        @EliteLexy Mine seem to happen randomly, so I can't place a trigger on them unfortunately. Like it would make sense if it happened when i was anxious or over stimulated. Heck maybe I'm overstimulated and don't realize it idk. I'm just glad I'm not alone.

          @SoxyWoxy I am still trying to pinpoint when overwhelm is happening. Still too new to this! Gah

      Yep. I recently saw that autistic people can have "random tic like stims" as it could be a way our neurodivergent brains work. I have a head jerk motion where it will move side to side. It doesn't help when I have a migraine though. Quite painful.

        @NonbinarySlytherin I bet. I'm sorry yours are like that. I wish they weren't so sucky

      I have similar! I can suppress it sometimes but rarely. I'll squeak or yelp

      yeah ! i have this thing where i'll randomly yelp , which is obnoxious since i currently live with roommates . but it's involuntary !

        @andio Mine is a weird chirpy noise like a cat makes. Luckily it isn't loud, I can only imagine how inconvenient it is for you. I've done it at work before (I'm a substitute teacher) and I have had to explain to students (luckily high school students so they are pretty chill) that I'm just wired different and I make a sound every so often. You'll never lose me in the dark!
