Ya my old therapist was like “diagnoses are just for insurance purposes nowadays, I don’t like putting emphasis on labels” I was like ok, not helpful…

Yess, my psychiatrist misdiagnosed me as Major Depressive Disorder at first then was like "well you definitely have a mood disorder but I don't like labels" and I was like I do what is it and she said Bipolar 2 but never switched it in her books so she told my school it was MDD not BP2 for getting accommodations

It depends, therapists have to “diagnose” you on the first appointment or insurance wont pay for therapy so they usually say something like anxiety, on the forms but in all other cases, yeah they tell me

I'm not sure where you guys are from but where I am their is a place that will just straight up say it. My therapist looked me dead in the face one day and said, "You have PTSD and possibly Split personality from all the trauma you've had in your life." I had no idea what to say. It took me weeks to tell my family. Being diagnosed with those really took a hit on the way I looked at life.

I’m trying to get my Tourettes fully diagnosed but my psychiatrist keeps pushing it off saying having it diagnosed won’t change it, and that it’s a waste of time. And my mom keeps telling me “having it diagnosed makes like more complicated for you”. That isn’t for you to decide.

I had to go to the hospital bc I get UTIs so frequently and they kept causing infections in my kidneys. they told me, “you are the most healthy person in here.” I was actually super discouraged and was pissed bc I was vomiting for 10 days straight. I looked at my notes about 3 months ago. I have a double ureter that is causing the frequent UTIs. all bc my body is filtering through my urine too fast.

@kk062001 that is kinda important information to know. especially when talking to other doctors. I went to the hospital for my kidney infection 2 years ago. why did I have to find out almost 2 years later?

I get that some of it is for insurance, I do. I’m a mental health caseworker, it is something we have to bill for. And labeling things isn’t always great, you know bc we’re worth more than labels and whatnot.. but at the same time, come on, we need to know what is happening in our brains and have a name and something that you can educate yourself on and learn to cope with. I find it highly annoying. I’ve had the same therapist for 15 years, literally half my life. Wouldn’t change her for anyone, love her. She has never once talked about a diagnosis. Ya know we’ve talked about depression and symptoms and what not but never actually said you have xyz. It wasn’t till in was inpatient 7 years ago that I learned my diagnoses. Ans my therapist asked me what my diagnoses were And then later on the receipt I got from my psychiatrist it had the DSM codes on it. Which have changed slightly over the years but not something we ever talk about. I think it’s fair of us to ask for/know our diagnoses. It makes you feel less isolated and alone. If you had diabetes, you’d wanna know that you had more than high blood sugar. So you can learn to live with it and make lifestyle changes. Meds. Whatever needs done. Oof. Sorry for the ramble. It just frustrates me too!

Yeah I’ve had a similar problem. Apparently my psychiatrist has known I’m moderately autistic for years but she never told me and never thought to have an official diagnosis done. It wasn’t until an autistic friend of mine said hey, i think you have ASD, that i asked my psych and she said yeah. Makes me mad.
