Hello! I have just started on a journey to understand and mend my body. I have recently been having GERD and it's wrecking my life overall with the other things I've got going on. All of this is scary and I would love to start a dialogue to make things easier on us all. :)

Mine flares up after lemonade, which sucks because I haven't had pop in about a yr and most places have at least a version of lemonade.

I currently take 2 different antacids to combat my issues. It started when I was prescribed a higher dose of a statin than I probably really needed and that screwed up my stomach for life. So now I take pantoprazole in the morning and if I need to I can take an extra strength pepcid in the afternoon. But I also know that those leech calcium out of your bones, so I make sure I take calcium every single day to help combat that and to help with the osteopenia I have in my left thumb.

Omeprazole is only designed to be taken short term not long term use as its damaging for the proton pump to be completely switched off.i have been recommended to take ppi many times but I have always refused and decided to take Hc2 blocker instead which works as a antihistamine.doctors are wrong to prescribe it for long periods, but if a person does not question it, then they think they are none wiser, but if you start showing that you know the difference with damage of proton pump inhibitors being switched off, then the dr will agree it's not designed to be taken for longer than 6 weeks

YES. Omeprazole has been basically the only thing that has saved me. GERD (which I'm still seeing my PCP to confirm but they're pretty certain that's what it is) has basically ruined my life for the past two weeks. I have been weak, anxious, losing it and in near constant pain, but I can tell a significant difference since Omeprazole. Now I'm not going to go without it. I was having panic attacks thinking I was having heart complications, but it was just this disorder. Gosh it has sucked so bad. I hope you keep finding relief as well, friend. šŸ™Œ

GERD showed up for me at around 13 years old. I missed a lot of school around then, and it took a while to get diagnosed. I was constantly tasting stomach acid when I burped, I was throwing up, horrible stomach cramps, not to mention waking up in the middle of the night and my throat is burning to the point I can't breathe. I don't know many people with it, which sucks. No one talks about it a lot, in my life at least. It's horrible to deal with. I've been on omeprazole ever since. I can't go off of it without having horrible symptoms (fun fact, quitting omeprazole can cause an increase in stomach acid for a few weeks šŸ„²). Although certain foods still trigger it for me regardless, it's a lot less severe.

@prettylydi I feel same that I am not on Protonix and has helped tremendously, but still have some triggers. Last one lasted about 2 hours as opposed to 6 or more hours off meds. Every time something happens I feel I may need to bring myself to hospital. No one understands what I am going through. Has taken a toll. I havenā€™t gotten diagnosis because need endoscopy and colonoscopy and wonā€™t do it because of the meds given as one reason. I canā€™t take any meds with this condition because my breathing gets impaired and I do not want a tube down my throat because I know my breathing will be affected. I keep running into hurdles with the tests they want to do. Even a CT scan requires to drink liquid and I am scared of my reaction to it. Been very draining when symptoms hit and gets me down. Donā€™t know what to do.

Do you find your GERD comes after certain foods? I have trouble after orange juice apple juice cinnamon anything which sucks bc I love cinnamon, haha. If you are trying to lose weight, that can trigger increased gastric juices. Stress, family history.... There are ways to combat it, so it is not so in charge.

@rjd2018 I think it's just so new that I'm still figuring it out. I lost a very close relative recently and I think that is what caused it to flare up this bad for the first time. Does it ever go away?
