[USA] Has anyone with POTS and/or ME gone through a successful wheelchair evaluation and gotten a chair covered through insurance? Could you share what reasonings + "supportive evidence" you/your therapist (PT/OT/evaluator) used to validate your need for a wheelchair? I'm going to be having a wheelchair evaluation in a few months in hopes that I'm able to get an ultralightweight, custom manual chair. My main issue is ME, but I imagine POTS may be easier to justify. I'm really nervous that because these are invisible illnesses and ME causes PEM after the fact, that whoever evaluates me will fail to comprehend why or how a wheelchair could benefit me (or that insurance will deny me solely because the risk to my health doesn't usually have an immediate effect, instead it comes hours later). [ For reference, I am mild-moderate, mostly homebound, and ambulatory, but energy-wise, I am constantly in the negatives because of how much energy it costs me just to walk around my house. I spend most if not all of my day sitting/lying in a recliner, without the energy to go out (unless I use my self-paid electric chair but i cant get it out the house myself :[ ) I have used both manual and electric wheelchairs during the past 2 years and know from experience that a chair could help me and allow me to achieve daily life, but none have been light enough to allow me independence without harm to my health; hence why i need an ultralight, custom chair [gonna try for a smartdrive too lol wish me luck] Any advice or stories appreciated šŸ™ (I've read through my insurance coverage criteria, and based on that as long as the evaluator can translate my needs into justifyable MRADL stuff that the insurance can understand, i meet criteria and should be covered. My insurance is less strict with this stuff than my last few. I have high hopes there)

One user shared their experience of getting a wheelchair covered by insurance. They mentioned that their doctor had to advocate for them, and the insurance eventually covered a custom-built wheelchair designed to fit their body and not add strain. The user has had the chair for over 10 years and it's still in good shape. However, they also mentioned that if their needs change, they would have to cover any additional costs out of pocket. It is important to work closely with your healthcare providers and insurance company to ensure you get the appropriate support and coverage for your specific needs.
