Does anyone else have issues at the dentist? The last time I had work done, I used IV sedation that was ridiculously expensive. I would 100% opt to do it again if I could afford it right now. But it seems my only options are oral sedation and/or laughing gas for the work I need done now. The last time I had work done awake, the pain was unbearable when they gave me the novocaine shot in my jaw to the point I cried. My anxiety over this and traumatic experiences have kept me from getting anything done other than regular cleanings. I literally have cavities in all of my teeth right now and the tipping point was getting an infection in one of my teeth recently. I really can’t handle any judgement on the matter.. I spent years depressed, eating junk, not caring for myself. I am now medicated and trying to take back control of my health but this is such a HUGE obstacle for me. I am terrified the options I have for sedation won’t be enough.. any advice welcomed. TIA

@smkeaton it all depends on personal preference/ pain tolerance. My father does not get any sort of sedation or numbing when he gets dental work and as a child I didn’t get novocaine when I got fillings because I found the injection was more painful than the filling itself

I was traumatized by a dentist when I was very young, I could never get work done awake. My teeth were basically falling apart by my mid 20's. Honestly, if it's becoming that much of an issue, I recommend having your teeth pulled and getting dentures. Changed my life for the better, and now I never have to visit the dentist (and hear those dreadful noises) again. 👍 They are very easy to take care of, and they look a lot more realistic than they used to. It's also going to be much cheaper than trying to salvage all the damage that's already done. If you get multiple pulled, they will knock you out for the procedure, so no worries there. Best wishes, friend.

I was the same way. IV sedation for the win! Fortunately I have found an amazing dentist who listens to me. I now do the laughing gas and that's enough because I know that he'll stop if I need him to. Try to find a dentist that specializes in anxiety, it's made the world of difference to me.

I’ve ended up having virtually no teeth because no dentist would ever sedate me and none of them would listen about the pain medications not working the. Would get frustrated with me not sitting still while they drilled. Unfortunately I’ve ended up without dentures that I can wear because similar reason, they wouldn’t listen about the fit or the gagging and now my bones deteriorated to where they don’t fit at all after I took a dremel to them

@MithPhenix so sorry to hear that was your experience… I’ve learned that dentists really don’t know much about TMJ or anxiety and it’s so frustrating having to advocate for myself every time.

Not sure if you’re up to trying the laughing gas but I’ve had that before and honestly that’s my preference when having dental work done!! Much better than novocaine- couldn’t feel a thing and time flies by!!

@aries02 I was under the impression they would still have to use the novocaine shots after using the gas to relax me? Can the gas be used in lieu of the shots? 🤔

I've always been bad at brushing my teeth, and eating junk. it just became a habit bc my childhood. I never had a toothbrush and all I had was junk food. I mean when I'd go to the dentist they'd always give me a tooth brush but my bio dad would always throw them away, and he'd say we didn't have money for actual food but we did he just used all of it on things he/we didn't need, or say that he didn't do pay rent when my grandma wasnt asking for rent. Anyways I'm not really good at advice. But when I go to the dentist for a cavity. I have the same problem and they have a TV or music playing. So, I just kinda get my mind on that instead of what's actually going on. It doesn't really help the pain. Sometimes I have to tell myself that they know what they are doing and it'll be over soon and I'll be all better. Or maybe try like just talking in your mind just about random things haha I know it may sound silly but look around and see things and "oh that's cool." That also kinda helped me.
