Hi, everyone :) I’ve been seen by an APRN in rheumatology within the same medical center where my PCP is. I want to get a second opinion on is going on with me physically. Most rheumatologists require a referral where I live. However, my PCP and the rheumatology APRN are close co-workers and I don’t want it to seem like I am second-guessing the APRN’s skills or anything…I just want to make sure I’m being fully and accurately assessed. Do you have any suggestions on how to ask my PCP for a referral without insinuating anything negative about my APRN?

Exactly what ladybrown said. They shouldn't be offended at all. Most doctors welcome another head in the fold to help figure out the best plan for you, they took an oath and really want to do their best for you, and that usually means that second opinions are welcomed.

Just tell them you want a second opinion. If they don't understand why then they are not being professional. Second opinions are just part proper medical care and usually not considered offensive by medical staff.
