Little OCD rant: My OCD has been so bad since moving, it’s super frustrating. A problem I’ve had for a while has been checking the gas stove to make sure it’s off. I had this problem before I moved too, but it’s just frustrating right now. I get scared that I left it on and the flame is off but there’s gas coming out. I have to check it before I go to bed and before I leave. I feel like that’s not terribly irrational, but it’s gotten to the point where I have to leave for the bus 20 minutes early because of that and checking my door is locked. And it’s such a battle to fall asleep because I get so caught up in checking the stove and doors. I’m so sick of this. I saw something saying “ocd isn’t a friend. It says it’s there to protect you, but it’s not doing that.”. I’ve been trying to remind myself of that, that I’ve checked the stove enough and there’s no way that if the stove is off, and I haven’t used it, that 5 minutes later it’s not magically going to be on. It’s just hard.

Idk if this is possible for you, but could maybe a camera help? Like maybe a camera pointed at the stove knobs so when you’re gone you could always check it live via your phone? I’m not sure if that’s a benefit/possible or not but maybe it could sort of help transition you from psychically checking it as often? I’ve also heard of people taking a picture of the knobs right before they leave the house, and when they get this feeling, they check the photo to show the status of them? I’ve heard some benefits about that one in one of my fb groups. You’re not alone with these feelings! ❤️‍🩹

@Magi thank you! I saw someone else on TikTok talking about taking pictures too and I’ve been trying that. For now it seems to help!

It's common for OCD to worsen during stressful periods, such as moving. One technique that might help is to look at the stove while turning it off and verbally confirm it's off. This can provide reassurance and reduce the need for excessive checking. Additionally, discussing your concerns with a mental health professional or doctor could provide further support and guidance in managing your OCD symptoms.
