Does anyone else feel like emdr just doesn't do anything? Every time I have sat through a session I do everything right but when my new therapist asks me what I feel or think I don't have a proper answer and she actually has just removed my ptsd diagnosis, even though I'm not getting any better and it's not going away. So at this point I am self-diagnosing because to hell with what she put on my chart. It doesn't help that it feels like after the past 2 months she has been getting frustrated with me and we're going to drop emdr and do something else. If it helps to know, I specifically have complex ptsd from long-term narcissistic abuse. Its hard to even come up with just one scenario to work on with emdr, when it feels like it's everything and every scenario is interconnected with another. Maybe that's just my own unique issue, but it feels like I cant be helped and I will always be broken like this.

My best friend has CPTSD, they tried emdr also with some mixed success. What was way more helpful for them was taking up martial arts and learning to apply the self-discipline from class to their daily life. They also went to therapy for a few years but they never really got on with their therapists. Medication was helpful so they kept at that, but your journey is yours and don’t let any person let alone a therapist put you in a box and say you’re not good enough for this to work. Try a different therapist (I’ve done this many times with much success). Try different things you haven’t tried before. Try to keep an open mind and try to be patient with yourself as other people try to help you navigate the minefield of your trauma. Not everyone is gonna get it right the first time. But no-one you’re paying to make you better should be making you feel worse! Try, try again ❤️

…also, there are so many methodologies of EMDR. Has she done the Board Room with you? That helps me immensely. I have to do EMDR- as a whole- very slowly and cautiously, as I have a tendency to disassociate when pushed. My therapist would never make ME feel bad or frustrated when a tool (like EMDR- tools for your mental toolbox) doesn’t work!

You need a new therapist! Maybe they aren’t even doing it right? If EMDR isn’t working, the therapist should try something else- everybody is different. Have you tried CBT?

I honestly would recommend you switch to imaginative therapy. I have c/ptsd too and since no one event caused my trauma, this method lets my therapist and i address them in any order I chose and quickly too.
