This isn’t about medication but I’m thinking of doing a tattoo on my forearm. Nervous about the pain being more intense due to my fibromyalgia? I have other tats but before I had fibromyalgia? Anyone have a bad experience with this or a flare afterwards? Thanks

Hey y’all. I recently had my first tattoo after I was diagnosed. It was a full forearm and took about 8+ hours. I agree that the pain was much more manageable than our usual. The fatigue was my biggest issue after, like a few mentioned. My artist explained that it’s hard on your body because it triggers an immune response to heal. Those of us with autoimmune diseases struggle with even the littlest dip or boost in our immune system, so (for me anyway) that’s why I crashed for a week after ❤️

Yes I have felt fatigue afterwards. Why is that
For me the pain of a tattoo seems to be more doable compared to that of fibro and can somewhat be a distraction from current fibro symptoms. My biggest issue with getting tattooed and having FM symptoms tends to actually be the fatigue afterwards

Tattoo numbing cream helps a lot if it's going to be in a painful spot like your chest. I just finished a chest piece and the numbing cream helped me sit better for longer

I got my tattoo after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. If you can handle the daily pain of fibro a tattoo is nothing! The worst part of it is sitting in the same position for a long time! Good luck 🍀

That’s good to know ❤️
I feared this too!! It really wasn’t that bad. Granted, I did get a smaller tat. If you’re doing a larger work, you may need to make several sessions just in case you need a break. Surprisingly, I found it quite therapeutic. With all of the chronic, unwanted pain in my life, I finally had the decision to choose a pain that I could control. It was quite liberating; and again, I would say therapeutic is the best word to describe my first tattoo experience with fibromyalgia.

Nothing changed for me! Not any worse
I I got my first tattoo 2 years ago for my 60th birthday. It’s just a cute little Hello Kitty on the inside of my left wrist. It really didn’t hurt too bad, but I think it’s because I have dealt with daily pain with fibromyalgia, IBS , headaches etc etc that I’m used to dealing with pain . I’m glad I got it 👍 👍
I am 60 and got my first and only tattoo on my shoulder 2 years ago. I was scared for the same reason. Choose an area with less nerve endings, not hands, feet, lower back etc...
I recently got a tattoo over my forearm, and all my tattoos before that were before I got fibro. It didn’t hurt more in the moment, but I had a minor flare afterwards. Lots of stuff about fibro is so subjective though, so it’s hard to tell what it’ll be for you.
