has anyone also with hiatal hernia had a doctor tell you, you may not be able to have surgery because it's so risky and that you have to lose weight to even be a candidate for surgery?

Yes I have. I have 4 different kinds of hernias and I am fairly certain that I am having issues with one. I have been coughing for more than a month. I think that may be why I'm hurting and uncomfortable at times. I feel an actual lump now. I didn't before.

I was told it's too risky at my age, 78. But, it sure is uncomfortable! I have a friend that was about 75, he and his wife both had successful surgeries! He said get a doctor that has done about 200 surgeries.

I haven’t gotten that particular reason… What my previous doctor told me is that there’s no possibility for surgery unless it ruptures or strangulation or is so big it’s about to, which at the size it was from my last scope he said was not likely. What I gathered from the doctor is that hiatal hernia surgery is an extreme measure because the surgery has a lot of possible complication and only on the table if it becomes life threatening. I’m in the process of getting help from a different doctor since the last was not very helpful in how to actually manage or prevent it from getting worse. Hopefully your doctor can explain better to give you more clarity of your options and why or that you can find one that can help you get more relief.
