I didn't know what it was before starting so no worries!! It stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Honestly it's kinda hard to explain and even when I looked it up it was difficult to understand until I actually started it. Alot of people think it sounds kinda wack (and in a way, it definitely does as it is very different than other therapy) but I suggest googling/doing some research to get lots of perspectives as it can be done differently by different therapists. Some use music, sounds, or silence while you follow a dot with your eyes only on a computer system or simply moving their hands back and forth and telling you to follow their finger while you reprocess the disturbing events in a safe way to desensitize certain feelings that may come up with personal triggers. I've noticed it helps me to be fully aware of my emotions especially when im triggered but it kinda allows me to look at what im experiencing in the moment from an outside perspective or as a "fly on the wall". I'm able to allow myself to acknowledge and feel those emotions but not dwell on them (which for me can very quickly turn into a panic attack) and I can kindly direct myself to de-escalate those strong emotions, calm down, and go to my "happy place" ๐Ÿ˜Š I hope this helps at least a little!
