Why does everyone think we want attention when we really need help

I saw a post recently that said people should change their language around mentally ill people “seeking attention” to “seeking support”. I think that’s something really important that people learn to understand. When you’re struggling there’s nothing wrong with wanting help and trying to talk to people about it, but some people have this mindset that all “real” depressed people keep it all to themselves and are great at masking their emotions. What a bunch of baloney!

lack of education, or an excuse to dismiss health problems.

They don’t understand how something can effect us so much. People believe we can be cured and that depression can just go away since their sadness did. No one is taught about mental health disorders unless they or someone they love have it. It’s the same thing was self harm tendencies, you could be okay one day and self harming the next. People believe it’s for attention when in reality everything was building up and something triggered the response to self harm again.

Lots of the symptoms of depression (as well as other mental illness) has unfortunately been romanticized and aestheticized by social media. Many people have also used it as an excuse for any bad behavior or things theyve done. These two things create a really bad stigma that helps no one.

Because they think depression is self inflicted and not a incurable illness
