Any other autistics here have synesthesia? I think I have a rare form: audio-tactile synesthesia. some sound feels like electricity shocks, tickling, light pressure, warmth, patterned vibrations that take on shapes. but some of my autistic friends taste or smell sound, or see colors for people, whiskey, emotions, or music! what is your sensory integration experience?

      i think qn important difference for me was the shapes and patterns. Like, A0 note has a particular warm shape on parts of my arm and back. But an octave higher is on my nose and shoulders. Each note has its own body sensation. One sound specifically makes the center of my tongue have a slight buzz/electricity feeling. Sometimes it might feel like my organs are lined with wool. Now sounds like dogs barking, keys jingling....I have physical feelings to them but its mostly just pain from it being too much too sensitive. These painful feelings to sound I think would be there without the synesthesia.

      I also get this sense of space and depth to esp music, like they are taking up different spaces of the air around me. But I'm unsure if thats just good sound engineering or.... Idk, it feels very tangible and tactile, taking on specific complex shapes depending on the chords. But there's no color to it? I have a pretty weak minds eye so I can't visualize concepts. I have a strong sense of space to the point where I get nauseated very easily in life, sometimes from walking. But its disoriented in I have zero ability to tell you where north is unless i memorize it for that location. Just highly aware of space. A friends piano tuner said he understood octaves once as a kid when he was riding in a car because of the distance between telephone poles. I feel like its a little more like that than, I think it might be called musical-space synesthesia

      Wait what?! I thought this was just a part of sensory issues? Like high pitch noises feeling like needles in my skull or Jean textures feeling like fire ants crawling on my skin….is this not just what sensory issues are?… I’m so confused lol.

        @Katty there is also hyperacusis

        @Katty commented more below. But also look into it there are many many types of synesthesia that aren't just seeing colors

      I'm not yet diagnosed with asd, but I definitely have synesthesia! Letters, numbers, weekdays, months, sounds, smells, pain, and some tastes all have color for me! Sometimes shapes/patterns, too.

        @minime273 does it change a little day by day for you? Are some days more vibrant than others? I feel like ot depends on how much sleep I've gotten and what my sensory needs are for thr day

      When I experience physical sensations and/or strong emotions in my body, they often have colors and shapes! Sometimes I try to translate the colors and shapes into visual art, or sometimes I do a shaking practice as a way of processing.

        @bbybutterfly i haven't considered swimming to process it thats such a good idea!

      i do too! i'm pretty sure there's a higher population of synesthesia in autistics :-) i associate people with colors & numbers, and my intuition is weirdly good because of that for some reason. i also feel music very physically and my vision can get blurred with colors and shapes! it sounds like we have some similar experiences there, very cool!! do you also have the experience of high pitched or loud sounds being physically painful?

        @bongmaster i replied a bit more as another comment below!
