Hi everyone 😀I’ve had acid reflux for a couple of years now and the pantoprazole isn’t working anymore so they’re going to do an endoscopy and I’m wondering what that is like and if I should be really worried that the meds don’t work anymore? Thank you!

i had an endoscopy this week! if they take biopsies, you’re gonna feel some nasty discomfort/pain in your chest when swallowing. your throat’s also gonna be sore for a day just due to the tubes they give ya. it’s a really quick and easy procedure. when i woke up they gave me some liquid tylenol and gatorade, then a popsicle while i regained my bearings. you’re gonna feel super phlegmy afterwards. it’s a pain to hack up but once it’s out, you’re basically good!

I don’t know about the meds not working anymore. But I have had a few endoscopes in my day. Everywhere I’ve had mine done they’ve put me under sedation, although I was pediatric for one so I think that was part of the decision the first time. You’ll check in with the nurse at the clinic, they take you back either to a pre-op room. They’ll go over your meds with you and have you put on your hospital gown, sometimes they’ll let you keep the waist down clothes on if there’s no metal in it. They’ll put in your iv and when it’s your turn they’ll take you to the procedure room. They’ll start the sedation and give you this viscous liquid to swallow. I think it was to help with the scope going down but I was already a little out of it from the sedation so I don’t remember exactly. They’ll do the procedure after you’re asleep and then take you back to pre-op. When you wake up they’ll come talk to you about the procedure and what they found. Then once you’re awake enough they’ll send you off with your ride home. It’s all in all pretty simple.
