How do you guys deal with the social implications of being HOH/deaf? I can’t hear or understand speech when someone is standing more than about 10 feet away, or if they are wearing a mask. I get uncomfortable immediately telling someone that I can’t hear, I just feel like it’s awkward. But then I tend to just stare at people when they talk, which is definitely more socially awkward lol. What do you guys do? Have you found a less awkward way of telling people you can’t hear than just “sorry I’m hard of hearing”?

Nah, I'm over caring what others think. I'll tell them straight up: 'If you want me to hear you, you're either gonna have to come closer or speak up, cuz I'm deaf-ish.' They either do one of those two things, or prove themselves a dick by not doing so. If they don't, I'll call them out. 'Haven't miraculously regained my hearing in the last 3 seconds. Still can't hear you.' Wash, rinse, repeat until they either make it so you can hear them, or they get embarrassed and leave.

I just keep it simple and say I’m having a difficult time hearing them

Honestly majority of the time I just act like I hear them and kinda nod my head because I don't want to ask them what they just said 20 thousand times
