When I'm highly dysregulated and distressed, using my DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) distress tolerance skills help me quite a bit. I also have an emergency coping box filled with different sensory items and low stress activities like a small box of Legos and coloring books. I often need to just ride out the wave of high distress for a little while until I'm regulated enough to use other DBT skills eventually. I also rely on my spirituality often through meditation, mindfulness, symbolism, ritual practice, etc. One doesn't need to be spiritual to do these things though.

I found focusing on basics and your values really helpful. Being kind too. It's very hard as you are in pain but trust that things will become easier. It's so hard to believe that when you are in the dark place, it's just that good at convincing you it can't be anything other than hell. It's simply not true. It does. I promise
