What do you do if you tell yourself that you "want" to get better, but you don't have the energy to even try to get better? I keep saying "Oh, I'll read this mental health book that may help." or "I'll try this method that helps with depression." and then for some reason, I never get the energy to do it and always say "Eh, it'll help temporarily, but I'll still be sad in the end." I'm always tired, I never try to do anything good for myself and I do want to get better, but it's like my body and mind don't want me to try and I'm not sure what to do.

Give yourself credit for the things you have done that helped make you feel better no matter how small they feel. Then start breaking it into smaller tasks that are going to take less energy to complete. Like instead of reading a self help book just skim through it and bookmark interesting/helpful looking sections to actually read later.

Helps me to watch very funny things. Even if I can't "lol" things I know is funny. For me it is stand up comedy and Who's Line Is It Anyway. I do that before bed and also before I need to do something that is hard to get up and do. Dunno why it helps.
@AnimalBoy this is such a good plan. If you like drawing or writing you can find a quote you like from the book or even use Pinterest and write it down and make art out of the quote- I’m a horrible artist but somehow just letting my hand flow as I write a quote that feels relatable to me let’s me feel like myself if only for a few minutes.
That is depression. I’m sorry you are going through that. It feels never ending and for me I felt even worse about myself everyday I went on like this- but the reality is it wasn’t my fault and so it wasn’t fair for me to take it out on myself- that only furthers the cycle of depression. Instead when you do something small reward yourself- no matter how small it may be it is something YOU were able to do that maybe you weren’t able to do the day before. When you fall short give yourself grace and speak positivity into the future/tomorrow ♥️♥️
Because that’s what depression does, it just makes everything in life very difficult to do… but you must force yourself to just do “ one thing “ at a time, just small little steps forward will help… you got this!
