I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and BPD. I’m 39. I’m in the process of trying to start my life. It’s complicated. But to put it in simple terms. I’ve basically lived my life like a teenager. 5 yrs ago I started trying to change my life because I was in my mid 30s and had nothing to show for myself. I wanted to finally do something with my life. I’ve always had a lot of issues but I ignored them until recently because I didn’t have any real responsibilities. But soon I will and I knew I needed answers and possibly help. Though I’m glad to finally have answers. I sometimes wonder if I’ll really be able to live a normal life. For those of you diagnosed with these things. Is it possible to live a halfway decently functioning life? How do you navigate around them? Also as a side note I started therapy for my BPD a couple weeks ago. Soon my therapist plans to start DBT with me. Also my ADHD is unmedicated. My psychiatrist wasn’t able to put me on any kind of stimulants and the one med she tried wasn’t working right.

@sick_desire I’m sorry to hear that. Maybe you could try to see another Dr. Or try to convince them to. Mine won’t prescribe them for me because I have a heart problem. 😕 she tried putting me on a type of antidepressants that’s supposed to help. It did help but she said that it would interact with the other antidepressant I take. So now I’m back to square one! 😒

I can relate quite a bit. I've felt like a "grown-up teenager" for most of my adult life. I just turned 36. I just recently got enrolled in school and it's going to take a very very long time for me to finish. DBT and individual therapy helped me tremendously but you HAVE to put in the work. You can't half-ass it. You have to take it seriously or it won't work. I'm happy to talk more if you'd like but great job getting started!!

@elizhall yes! I e heard that. That you have to really try and invest in it. Which at this point in my life I’m ready! I had been working on myself before I even went to seek help. Actually the therapist that I see told me that she could tell that I had done a lot of work on myself. She said she was impressed with the skills I had already developed outside of therapy. She also told me I was leaps and bounds ahead of all her other patients. Which was nice to hear. Made me feel like, ok maybe I am doing something right. I just gotta keep going. And yes I’d like to talk more. Thank you for that. I’ll be sending you a message soon. I think it would be nice to connect with someone who understands what I’m dealing with. 😊 🙏

For some reason this sounds like how my life is going. I'm trying to get on stimulant adhd meds and my psych doctor won't proscribe them.
