How do you deal with people and misconceptions about your disability? Sometimes it’s as if I educate them, they forget the next day or refuse to believe me.

If it's people I know, I quite literally just point to my ears and say "Hey! Deaf!" They proceed to look chastised and speak up, or at least look at me so I can lip-read. I'm not completely deaf, but seeing as subtlety and being 'correct' with the terms doesn't always work, it's a good in-their-face reminder, because people tend to see in extremes. So, saying 'I'm hard of hearing/hearing impaired' never sticks. Saying 'Yo! Deaf person in the building! Talk like ya mean it!' gets through to them somehow. TL:DR - People are stupid; approach appropriately.

This probably isn’t the best way to handle it haha but I make jokes about my hearing loss so most people who know me are reminded and don’t forget! And I always let them know if the joking crosses a line. It makes me feel less alone and more lighthearted so I like it!

Honestly for people that forget, I just kinda forgive. It’s not an obvious disability so I can understand why they would forget. I think something that could help is saying “hey I didn’t hear that because of my disability can you say that again?” Just to remind them again. The more reminders, the more people are going to remember it. As for people that refuse to believe it, they just suck and remind yourself that you’re not the problem.
