Does anyone experience excessive daytime sleepiness, where they have sleep attacks and hypnagogic hallucinations? I know this is associated with narcolepsy but as of now I have not tested positive for it but I also know autism is associated with many sleep related issues. I started treatment for mild sleep apnea recently but it is not helping

This has happened to me as well... I thought I had narcolepsy because my senior year of highschool, I struggled to stay awake and would sleep in classes that allowed me. When I was home, I'd hallucinate and question whether or not it's a dream or not. So I slightly feared that I'd have a hallucination episode whenever I felt sleepy. I honestly did absolutely nothing to solve this. I didn't seek therapy or anything. it randomly disappeared just like it randomly appeared. During this time I tried to find something that made me happy or calm my nerves. Id watch the old cartoon network show Chowder, and I'd forget about everything and zone out watching it because it's my favorite show of all time.

Faye00- I think I know what you mean by randomly disappeared. There was a period in grad school where I just did not have these sleep attacks most days and it was fantastic. Oddly, it happened after I watched a video on youtube that was meant to help with preventing daytime sleepiness, but I don’t think it could have been due to that? Regardless, it helped for a bit! But then after grad school it just returned in full force. I love how watching Chowder helped you. I sometimes try to listen to showtunes and instrumentals, or my podcasts.

Oops! SAMHAIN I mean!
Samkahn- I would recommend leaving a message if there is any way to, such as voicemail or patient portal? Also, I was lucky to get into a sleep clinic without a referral but it was super hard to find one that tales people without referrals. I hope you are able to get an appointment soon.
ToeKnee—isn't that literally what they said, or did I miss something? What's being corrected? Ameteine—recently diagnosed with what? Autism? I'm fighting with my PCP to *actually* call the sleep clinic to establish my referral, but it's been over a month and I've still yet to get them to phone one time. Anyone have tips getting your doc in gear when you keep staying up until just before they're open and crashing until theyre closed? 😮💨

Good luck with your sleep study Sherohn! I have my followup with the sleep doctor in April so I am hoping they can help me move forward with further testing.
THIS yes. I do a ton. I’m going to be tested for Narcolepsy tomorrow and hopefully I’ll have a diagnosis by the middle of next week. It’s been a tough road.

I think you mean hypnagogic hallucinations. I get these sometimes when walking up at night but they are my rare for me. I get hallucinations the most for lack of sleep there a shadow in the corner in my eye or thinking a vaccine cleaner is a person and jump. I'm not sure about it being common with autism.
Oh wow, is that what’s that called? I’m an insomniac and ironically, I sleep better during the day for some reason. It’s different than depression naps because you’re sleeping because there’s nothing to do, not the overwhelminess to want to dream and sleep
Thank you both. And Poprockx, this is just like what happens to me!!!! And sometimes it out of nowhere gets better.
I don’t know if it’s any help but I get random sleep attacks often where I physically cannot keep myself awake no matter how hard I try and I can never remember where I am, i’m very discombobulated and have very vivid dreams.
I have a LOT of sleep problems spanning most of my lifetime, but I am not familiar with this experience. Feel free to 👀 my profile.
