Somehow, I had a prick test where none of the common allergens are what I am allergic to. However, I have had many many IBS issues probably related to allergies, and a lot of environmental issues with a stuffy nose and phlegm in the throat. I think this either means I have type IV reactions that are delayed rather than immediate, so i want to do a patch test (which sounds awful) but I am unsure. Maybe I am just allergic to things we didn’t test for (which wouldn’t surprise me, I have such messed up rare genetics that it wouldn’t be weird), there is no way I am not allergic to quite a few things. Anyone else with this experience with EDS?

There’s two types of allergic reactions. IGE, which are the anaphylactic responses, is what most doctors will test. Or IGG, which are the inflammation/autoimmune reactions. IGE only said bananas for me, but IGG was all things gluten, dairy, beef, garlic, coriander, rice, and oats. Once I got the IGG allergens cleaned out of my diet I felt a million times better.

@Alfubet what type of allergy testing was this?

@A424 they are both prick tests.

Small intestine bacterial overgrowth, SIBO, is very common and one source I read said its the leasing cause of IBS. Slow gut motility is also common in EDS. Some things to consider looking into for your GI issues

@Foxtail That is very true!! One push for me to get allergy tested is that my mom has a lot of bowel and GI issues as well and has found that it was mostly due to allergies, but it definitely could be so many things that we don’t know with IBS so definitely something I consider.

Hey! I have EDS, POTs and MCAS (something that causes several allergies) and had prick tests done and I found them useless - Same with blood. It came up that i wasn’t allergic to things I knew i was. When i later got patch tested, things that had come up as negative in the other tests, suddenly came up as positive in the patch testing, so if it would be possible for you to get patch testing, i really recommend it!

@Vievie May I ask, what kinds of reactions did you have to those allergens?

@randochikn - they all seemed so random and different though started as mostly skin reactions and about a year on from testing it became more widespread reactions - but I was having many flare ups of contact dermatitis, atopic and dyshridrotic eczema, hives, fainting episodes and burns in my mouth/throat. some were super mild that we just thought it was a bit of a rash, and some were quite severe

Do you happen to take Seroquel? I was told by my allergist that taking some meds could skew the skin allergy test. Hope this helps.

@Magpie42 So I don’t take Seroquel, but I am on antidepressants and I read (briefly, didn’t look too much into it since the allergist never said anything about it being related) that it could skew results, unsure though.

I did blood and patch and the only things that reacted were environmental but I have plenty of reactions to food including anaphylaxis with fish but my skin did not react. They suspected MCAS but so far it’s been difficult to figure out.

@tallgirl22 I’ll have to look into it more! There are different reactions like IgE or cellular so I wonder if that would indicate anything

@randochikn yes I had a low level for one of them but my doctor brushed it off and it didn’t lead anywhere but I hope you are able to find more answers!
