so i know im gonna sound really selfish here but i recently started group therapy. and its okay. but idk i feel some type of way. i know its not a competition, but i feel like everyone else problems are less than mine and that no one understands how bad it is for me i dont mean to be like this. i know its not about who has it worse. i just feel like my pain is so much more intense than others, even though rationally i know that isnt true or fair to think am i a bad person? probably but i dont want to be so if someone could help me not to be so self centered that would be great

hey honey. these feelings coming up may be a sign that a different kind of therapy could benefit you more! or maybe the feelings will lessen the more you go. you are not a bad person. sending love.

Some people do better in groups, and others do better with solo sessions. I think how you feel is completely valid. In my experience, group therapy has typically been for people with minor issues, or ones that are already in the maintenance phase of therapy. If you are still trying to actively work through stuff, solo sessions will probably be better for you. I would also like to add that a lot of people don't feel comfortable talking about the really bad things in group therapy because they're afraid of judgment or they're afraid of upsetting someone else. You're only seeing what's outside of their head, not what's inside it. I try to remember that anger is our subconscious's way of communicating with us. And based on what you said, it seems like your anger is trying to tell you that you don't feel understood. Plenty of people will say that you need to communicate better, but you can communicate all you want. Comprehension is just as important, and if the person that you're communicating to doesn't or won't comprehend what you're saying, it's not going to work.

That's understandable and normal. Coming from learning psychology and need therapy myself. I get it. No one will ever truly be able to understand you and what you been through apart from you. It's the awful truth I learnt a while ago.

1 on 1 therapy would probably suit you better as then you can tackle your own problems and be the only focus, a lot of people myself included have the opposite problem to you where we struggle to validate our feelings even when they’re the most valid and so it might not be helpful in that group for people that feel that way to have the comparison of someone who feels the opposite so for both parties 1 on 1 is probably best, and you are definitely not a bad person

@solsticedead I was coming to type something just like this! I found Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to be quite helpful. The group experience of being around so many people that struggle in similar amounts that I do was therapeutic. I have also heard that EMDR is really good for those with PTSD, I'm starting that next week! Also, seeking a provider who conducts trauma-informed therapy should be a good fit. Good luck! 🤗
