Looking for tips and strategies for chronic migraines. I have hit a wall with medications (if anyone has advice on how to get insurance companies to approve different treatments that would also be great), and am looking for more alternative treatments, but I am open to anything.

Topomax has worked wonders for me. I use heat, ice and cold are a trigger for me. Good ole peppermint oil in my diffuser and vicks vapor rub help tremendously when I feel one first coming on, as well as anything mint. There are also some pressure points that you can do that help - I heard about those and googled them. For many many many years I have pinched/rubbed/squeezed my nose area that is between my eyes. It seriously helps. Before all of this, I was literally banging my head on a wall during a migraine because that moment when my head hit the wall gave me a split second of relief - I do NOT recommend that, however I do know that in the middle of a migraine, we will do anything to just make it stop hurting.

I think the best thing is to make sure you find a doctor that advocates for you. Mine fought so hard with my insurance company to make sure both my Emgality and Botox were covered. I also had to reach out to them and file appeals for coverage. It helps to document things as best as possible to provide more evidence of what is working or not to insurance companies (Migraine buddy is a great app, if you don't already use it. Track every headache day, not just migraines). I hope you can get some relief!

@MattieEstelle omg yes!! before my meds that I started I would hit my head with my hands because that was somehow better than the migraine lol

@MattieEstelle I used to do that too, or slap myself really hard on my arm, scratch my legs almost to the point of bleeding to distract from the pain in my head. I also do NOT recommend this. I just think it's incredibly sad that we have had to cope with the pain in this way.

I've been on ubrelvy at least 2 years and recently a medication called ergotamine and it works for me too.i get a migraine everyday šŸ˜„ the weather and stress are triggers for me.i use a migraine cap that goes in the freezer, essential oils like peppermint and also salonpas stickers that you can put on your skin where the pain is,it provides a cooling sensation. I also need it dark in whatever room I'm in or if I'm out I have sunglasses on!

@Rae09 does your insurance cover ubrelvy for you?

Iā€™m currently on maxalt but iā€™m trying to switch because itā€™s making me really sick when I take it. however, I also have a weighted heating cap thing that I use; I canā€™t use ice it makes my migraines worse so I have this thing you just heat up in the microwave. Sleep is one of my biggest triggers so I really pay attention to a night routine, especially if I know I have a big/busy day the following day. Also staying hydrated, I like having gatorade on hand for once a migraine actually comes on.

Once my insurance stopped covering ubrelvy for me I was 1) rightfully pissed and 2) thought my life was over. I pay close attention to the weather and if there will be incoming pressure systems. I also stay hydrated both with regular water and liquid iv. When I feel a migraine coming on I normally do at least 1 ice pack if not 2. It also helps me to drink a Gatorade in sips and have something to support my neck (like a rolled up towel) best I can do to prevent or minimize my migraines. I still have some ubrelvy left and I normally pair that with a muscle relaxer to help if Iā€™m in too deep. I hope you find something to help
