I do it my therapist said it was a good way to relive the life I didn't get to as a kid

Me! It's my FAVOURITE coping mechanism. My partner doesn't really understand it, but it helps me so much to slip into my little space.

Yes! I had a great childhood, but my teenage years were awful, so revisiting my good childhood always helps me feel better.

How can it be used as a tool? I’m fascinated by this idea.

@AlikeYou33 a lot of the time it can be used as a distraction like if you’re upset but you’re Colouring a colouring book or playing simple video games/watching childhood cartoons it distracts you from the stress. This can also help you to calm down so you can think more clearly and not keep panicking and making things worse

I sometimes feel like I’m a tiny child again when I am triggered, but I wouldn’t say that I really regress in those situations. I just wanted to comment, though, because I’ve read a lot of books by psychiatrists and therapists, and I’ve learned they age regression is a common coping mechanism, especially with people who have a history of childhood trauma. When trauma happens during those formative years, you can regress to that stage of development in some ways. I highly recommend books by Bruce Perry. He’s a child psychiatrist, and the material can be heavy because he tells stories from his real clinical experience, but he’s super insightful on trauma and it’s effect on development.
