Does anyone struggle with a friend that tries to relate to you, or self diagnose with autism when they clearly don't have it? it's irritating, and really demeaning. Whenever I so much as mention a trait somewhat related to autism such as a sensory or social issue, they'll comment by saying 'me too' or 'same' and make some idiotic joke about autism. I enjoy spending time with them, and I've tried setting boundaries. I don't exactly need solutions, but it'd be nice to know I'm not alone in this situation.
Although I have never really known someone who claims to have autism but doesn't have it, that does sound frustrating. It sounds like they do not understand and are invalidating. I think it is possible autism is misdiagnosed as something else in some people, and for people to self diagnose incorrectly. Maybe they just manifest the symptoms differently and that is why it appears they do not have it. I am not saying that is the case with your friend, but it can happen. Or maybe they really don't have it and just trying to relate to you. It sounds like they mean well and truly do not understand and maybe you can explain to them what autism really is.
