Hello! So can somebody explain Hashimoto’s to me like I’m 5? I’m having a really hard time understanding based on reading on the internet. How can I know if I have that or something else? And does it really matter to know, is the treatment the same?

Hey! Your thyroid is a gland right below your voice box in your neck, and it is responsible for producing hormones that control metabolism. “Controlling metabolism” means a lot of things—the rate your heart beats, the temperature of your body, your cholesterol levels, your weight, and even your menstrual cycles. Basically, Hashimoto’s is a disease where your immune system attacks your thyroid and prevents it from making those important hormones. Without them, every cell in your body slows down. It’s very important to take your synthroid, because otherwise all your hair will fall out and you’ll get depressed and fat. This is precisely how I wish someone would’ve explained it to me when I was 5, so I really hope it helps a little!

The only way to find out is to have an antibodies test done. You could have hypo or hyperthyroidism and not have Hashimoto’s. Have you been diagnosed with hypothyroidism? The real key is finding a competent doctor, in my opinion. Most doctors and endocrinologists are not that great when it comes to thyroid issues. Wishing you good health.

Hashimotos is an autoimmune disorder which causes the body to attack the thyroid. Many people with hypothyroidism have Hashimotos as well. I think the only way to know for sure would be to have your antibody levels tested.
