My doctor wants to prescribe me hydroxyzine instead of having lorazepam. What do you guys think? I have terrible anxiety and will not google any of them.

I take it occasionally for anxiety when needed. It has seemed to help me the times that I have taken it.

I would try a psychiatrist if you have the funds!! Just don’t get freaked out if they diagnose you with something other than GAD. I went to one who barely listened to me, and diagnosed me with Bipolar Disorder.. (which I do not have) and she put me on meds for that. That did not end well for me.. but most of the other ones were very helpful! Wishing the best for you 🙌

Hydroxyzine helps me, according to the people I live with. I like it because it doesn't bother me at all and other people say it works well.

Personally hydroxazine has helped my anxiety whenever I feel anxious. But it’s definitely different for other people. It does nothing to my husband at all.

Following this looking for a good anxiety med. I’ve been prescribed hydroxyzine before (didn’t work, made me dehydrated also) and clonidine (worked for like a month then tapered off) and now I’m on guanfacine, which KINDA works, but not for sudden attacks at all. Hoping someone shares something good here 😅

I used to take hydroxyzine for anxiety and sleep and personally I liked it. I leveled out on it tho and switched to seroquil

@Sav7242 I am also on seroquil the lowest dose (25mg) which helps with sleep. But not during the afternoon when I have anxiety attacks. If I could sleep all day I would so I didn’t have to deal with anxiety.

@Crossmar17 my doctor prescribed me 100mg at night but at one point he prescribed me 25 throughout the day for anxiety but I kept sleeping all day lol

I wouldn't really recommend it. It worked for me until a doctor told me it was just a placebo effect, now it does absolutely nothing

Thank you for the info on that Freddi. My blood pressure is already considered low and so I know they wouldn’t prescribe me that. I’m just wondering if I should see a psychiatrist and ask them what is best. Lorazepam really helps me calm down when having an anxiety attack and it’s making my anxiety worse not having it on hand. They just upped my Prozac to 40mgs so I’m hoping that my anxiety won’t be so bad once I get used to that.

@Crossmar17 Propranolol does really well for me. It's kind of a 30-minute rescue net (it takes 30 to work) and it reduces blood pressure. I'm already on the low end of normal (like 92 over some number because I don't pay attention 😁) and my psychiatrist prescribes about 20 - 40 mgs and I'm about 160 lbs. Propranolol is also very inexpensive. I hope you get some help. I highly recommend a licensed psychiatrist who has a more nuanced view of your needs.

@AndThereSheGoes , I agree go to a Dr(psychiatrist) as they have the experience with the meds for anxiety, depression ECT!

@AndThereSheGoes do you take the propanolol everyday or just when you have anxiety attacks?

    • Crossmar17

Well they want me on something that isn’t considered “addictive” I’m just worried that it’s not going to help at all as I’ve taken Benadryl and that didn’t help with my anxiety attack. Is the clonidine for anxiety specifically or is that blood pressure medicine? Do you have to take it everyday? I just need something that will work because I don’t wanna go to the hospital every time I have an anxiety attack.. especially if hydroxyzine don’t work.

@Crossmar17 Hydroxzyine is geared towards being taken when having an anxiety attack/panic attack, but i’m going to go back and research Clonidine myself as I’ve never heard of it yet (I am new to medications)

@Freddi Here’s what I found regarding the medication of Clonidine: Common brands: Catapres-TTS-1, Catapres-TTS-3, Catapres-TTS-2 Description Sedative and Antihypertensive drug It can treat high blood pressure. Certain formulations can also treat ADHD and cancer pain. Once again I’d definitely wait from someone who takes it, I just wanted to say that it’s an anti-hypertension medicine basically.

Hydroxyzine didn’t work for me. Clonidine did. It lowers blood pressure and calms me down. I started taking clonidine so that I could stop taking Valium. It’s not a benzo, not habit forming, and works great. My doctor kept telling me I can’t be on benzos forever as it puts you at risk for dementia later on in life (in addition to being habit forming)

Hydroxzyine is an Antihistamine: It will make you really tired and in general quote, “calms the body down”, dependent on what milligram dose you have (I want to assume they put you on 25 for starters) it may or may not work. I take Hydroxzyine *with* my Sertraline because yea, truth be told it… Doesn’t do a lot for your anxiety if it’s that much. It’s a lot better / less impactful than some other types of anxiety medications, but that’s really up to you. Tldr: no ill side effects except basically feeling drowsy when I took it, so I didn’t bike or operate heavy machinery when I did it for the first day.

hydroxyzine is most often used to relieve itching from allergies. it was basically useless for my anxiety. do not recommend lol

Hydroxyzine did absolutely nothing for my anxiety
