Does anybody else try therapy and feel like everything they tell you, you already know, and it feels like a waste of time? Ive never felt benefit from therapy and I hate that. I’ve tried multiple therapists but I feel the same way every time :( I feel like I’m too self aware, I’ve had therapists tell me that too. Self conscious more or less. I just can’t fill the emptiness in my life, or find a reason to be productive.

@Layley Hypnotherapy has a long a complicated history. In short, it's real and helpful, but not everything you hear about it is real. I do reccomend it! Try talking to a professional to get a good idea of what they can and can't do. Hypnotheapry really shines with pain, addiction, and immune responses, but also can certainly help with mental health. It's not a truth serum or a memory recoverer. It just puts you into a relaxed, dreamy state that makes it easier to interface with your subconcious and automatic systems. It's not about what it can bring out, but what it can program in. Like better habits, relief from stress, etc. It can help you feel less afraid to tell the truth, if you're willing to. You can definitely lie and protect secrets while hypnotized, but if you want to tell the truth, it may come easier. However, it will be the truth as you see and believe it, not the truth as it actually is. If you try to piece together lost memories, you'll just end up accidentally believing a new dreamed up narrative. Hypnosis is all about the present and the future.

I'm very self-aware too and have also had therapy that seemed, like a waste of time. The big solution for me was being told you can TELL your therapist "This is what I need/don't need, this is what does/doesn't work for me, this is what I like/don't like, this is what I do/don't want to try..." etc, and telling them in-the-moment feedback like "No that doesn't sound right" or "I don't know how to use that information" or "can we skip this part"? Take active control of your therapy sessions, they don't find it rude, in fact it's very helpful to their process. Even if they think you're jumping the gun about something, it helps give them more insight into your thought process. Active feedback and expectation management with therapists! I think most of us are trained by school to sit quietly and try to memorize what a professional is lecturing to us, but in therapy, you're in the room together not to do work for them, but for them to do work for you.

@Doggy that’s really good advice. What do you make of hypnotherapy? I was reading about it yesterday, and if it were my subconscious telling this therapist my inner thoughts i wouldn’t be able to control how true they were they’d just be true… or is that a fantasy and hypnotherapy is a fluke?
