Has anyone gone through the SSI/disability process to claim disability? I’m in the process of it and have no idea what I’m doing because this is my first legal thing I’ve done with out support of family. My attorney has been very helpful on how things will go but I just want someone’s experience and advice. 23/F

I was denied in 2015, and again in 2021. I got an attorney now and new hearing coming up July 2022. I'm nervous and anxious. I've given it to God. The worry causes me flares.

It's very good you have an attorney! The process took me three years but I was approved the first time I went to court. My advice, keep track of every phone call, doctors visits and outcomes and always tell your attorney exactly how you hurt. I wish you luck on your journey!

@Scoutie Wow that’s terrible that you have waited so long. Just keep praying.🙏🏼

I am 35 have Crohns and had my colon removed since I was misdiagnosed at 20 yr old. I do not have an osteomy but a Jpouch. Since trying biologics in 2020 I have been having over whelping body pains and severe lethargic times where I can barely move. It is not depression. I have the backing of my doctor, not that he was involved. I still work but had to cut back to less than 16 hours a week because of all the issues plus brain fog. I applied myself in December 2021 online for SSDI. Had to muddle through the forms, long confusing forms and long waits on the phone many times. And to my surprise I was accepted in March but had to wait till May to receive anything as they have you wait 60 months from application. I did not have to speak to a doctor from SSDI. I think the fact that I still try to work made a difference. The only people I know that got it right away were either legally blind or dying and that freaks me out.

@ImaKandiMoose I've tried working many times it just doesn't work out. I can't do anything physical, even if that just means standing for longer than 20 minutes. I also can't do anything that requires computers or driving because of my seizures. So I'm quite limited unfortunately.

@Raquel226 I have the same issue. I don’t do well in heat either. My doctor is working on trying to find a medication that actually works. Im on 3 at the moment with continued smaller seizures. What about you?

I apologize in advance for the length of my post, but I wanted to give you details. I applied for disability with an attorney shortly after moving to Florida in 2014. My older sister had been through the process, which is how I knew it would be nearly impossible without an attorney. I was denied by mail 3 times, and then had the option to have a hearing. I've been chronically I'll since I was 11 and had several conditions that on their own should've gotten me approved. Therefore I was surprised how difficult it was. It came time for my trial and the judge didn't seem to give a damn to be honest. They had thousands of pages of medical records, but decided to call an independent doctor that had reviewed some of my records but never met or even spoke to me or my doctors. He said it could go either way and didn't give a specific recommendation. At this point my attorney attempted to argue my case, and the judge wouldn't let him say a word. He ultimately denied me with no reason, although I feel my age (38) was a factor. Since then I've heard it's particularly difficult to get disability in Florida, and I hope that changes. I'm considering trying again with a new firm. I wish you the best of luck in your disability case! Feel free to reach out if you need advice or just to vent.

Yes I am on disability because I have a fatal disease. Getting kidney transplants is what is buying me time on this earth. There is no cure for my disease and one day it will take my life. But I will say I don't make enough money to even support myself. It's a very sad deal to have to go thru. Praying you get on it and soon ❤️🙏

I'll assume you're in the US, as I am. I am three years into the process of applying. It typically takes 2-5 years to get accepted. They will find any reason to deny you. It's practically impossible without an attorney. I hope you have better luck than I've had.

@Gigirez I have an attorney and he said I have a pretty strong case so far but I understand the stats of every 1/5 people get accepted

I have had a hearing and got denied. It's a challenging process. My attorney put in for an appeal. They think I have a chance.

I just went through the first interview. I don’t have an attorney. I was told this process could take up to 6 months for a decision.

@Momx3 I have my interview today over the phone. I started the process with Atticus, a law firm that works with disability and SSI. they found an attorney for me, but I have no idea what I need to do on my end. I also don’t know if theyll accept my case (I know 90% of people apply the first time gets denied) I’ve talked to all my therapists about it and they support it I just haven’t talked to my main treatment team about applying. Because I know it’s a long process I went ahead and started with out my teams opinion.

@Always_Napping I’m also still in process of getting exact diagnosis, I’m idiopathic so my care team is trying to pin point what’s going on with me
