this is a PSA announcement. if you are on a therapist directory online and you see the abbreviation "LCSW" or anything with an "SW", that means they are a social worker. "LMFT" means Liscened Marriage and Family Therapist. (they do not only specialize in couples counseling.) I highly recommend finding an LMFT who truly understands mental disorders, trauma work, and intergenerational patterns. That is, unless you think a social worker would do a better job at what you need. I'm not bagging on them I'm just saying, there's a difference.

LCSW stands for Licensed Clinical Social Worker, which is a licensure that’s takes well over a year to obtain. LCSW’s are qualified therapists and work in a variety of mental health settings, receiving supervision and working for over 3,000 hours, 100 of those hours involving required supervision. I am currently working towards my licensure and have worked in mental health for 2 years, providing services for university students and the community through working at counseling centers. LCSW’s are highly trained in trauma work, the utilization of the DSM-5, and have a plethora of knowledge. Please reconsider this message you are sending out to those who are in need of a therapist.

Thank you both so much. I realize I was biased. I really like what Lyndi said: " Quality is more directly related to a person's dedication and adherence to the research-based training available." I can't figure out how to delete this post..! probably because the app is kind of new.

Luna is right! 💕 I have a Masters in Marital & Family therapy (LMFT-Candidate), & would recommend anyone with LCSW, LMFT, or LPC credentials! 🤗 The most important thing is finding someone who specializes (is trained in) & has worked more extensively in your area of need. 💛 You can find high quality therapists (or unfortunately, low quality) with any of these credentials! Quality is more directly related to a person’s dedication and adherence to the research-based training available. The same trainings (CBT, EMDR, TF-CBT, etc.) can be pursued by an individual with any of these credentials (LCSW, LMFT, LPC). Also, different universities train their therapists in these fields slightly differently. That can make it a bit tricky to find a quality therapist as well! Some universities are training incredibly well in evidence-based therapy & treatment planning, while others are only utilizing broad-based general counseling knowledge in their programs.
