so much has gone downhill in the last four days. a year ago, I had my left big toe fused as a last resort. I healed great and had pain with too much activity/weather changes, but I thought that was my new normal. on thursday, I was leaving for school (I’m a full time college student and have fought so hard to be able to attend while balancing my health) and I noticed a huge bump under my incision. I knew something was wrong, so I showed my mom, an RN. she said it was probably just a keloid and I went on my way. throughout the day, the pain got worse and I knew it wasn’t a keloid. I left school early and went to urgent care on Saturday. there’s a screw backing out of my hardware and my toe didn’t take the fusion. the stress and pain from my toe has sent all of my illnesses into a flare and I was told minimal weight bearing until I can get in to see my surgeon. unfortunately I can’t see her until the end of March and that has sent me into an absolute spiral. what am I supposed to do about school while I have to deal with all of this? all of my classes are in person but I can’t get around campus and i’m in so much pain I can barely focus enough to finish my schoolwork. I’m so discouraged because I took five years to figure out my health and worked my ass off to get to a point that I could go back to school and it’s all crashing and burning. I don’t get to make decisions anymore or do what makes me happy. my body makes those decisions and I’m angry. so unbelievably angry

not sure if this is an option for you, but you might be able to rent a wheelchair, use one from the school, or even buy a cheap one. that only solves the getting around issue of course but it might make stuff possible. not sure what you have access to with painkillers, but even things that just lessen the pain some could help you cope - not just pills but stuff like topical anaesthetics (as long as youre not putting any physical stress on the area), heat/cold, counterpressure, even things like music that can keep some focus off of it and get some dopamine going. any other strategies youve learned for it, this is the time to use them. you can also consult with your school's student services - they might be able to do stuff to support you, anywhere from getting teachers to extend deadlines to having classes streamed to you recorded so you can access them when you're able and from your own space. best of luck
@anemone thanks so much! i’m contacting my student service department today to hopefully work something out
