It’s also important to recognize that medication alone might not be enough. A lot of people (myself included) do best with a combination of meds and therapy.
I’ve only ever tried Prozac, but I’ve luckily been stable on it for nearly 4 years. The first two weeks or so were pretty terrible, but after that it was like a switch flipped and I felt better than I had in years. It was really life-changing. The best way I can explain it is that your brain needs time to get used to a new medication. I nearly stopped taking Prozac in the early days because I initially felt worse — turns out I just needed more time to adjust! That’s not to say you should keep using medications that don’t work for you, but make sure you’re giving them a fair shot. Finding the right medication and dose takes time and it will be different for everyone. The best thing you can do to help the process is keep good communication with your healthcare provider.
