this is a pretty popular book recommended in the CPTSD community, but I didn't check it out until recently. and MAN do I regret not checking it out sooner lmao... "The Body Keeps The Score" by Bessel van der Kolk. it's all about trauma, mostly childhood complex trauma, and its effects on your body and behavior. not only is it very informative, but it's just as validating. it talks about the different ways in how people can react to complex trauma, and it explains even differences in how the brains of traumatized individuals work and process information (like, did you know during flashbacks the region in the brain responsible for speech, Broca's area, shuts down?? or that in non-traumatized individuals direct eye contact activates the frontal lobe, while in traumatized individuals the region in the brain responsible for self-protective behaviors like startle, hypervigilance, and cowering activates instead?). further in, it also discusses ways you can help yourself, coping strategies, different tricks for different types of symptoms, etc. though I haven't made it that far in the book yet as I'm a slow reader lol. so if you're like me and have known about this book for awhile but just never put in the effort to check it out, I highly recommend it!!! if you don't have the money to buy it, you can download a pdf of it online... but you didn't hear that from me. [I would recommend looking up trigger warnings for it if you can. I'm not actually sure if anyone online has compiled a list of them, but some parts of the book can get slightly graphic in talking about people's histories of trauma and abuse.]

Thank you for this awesome recommendation! I've heard the title floating around for some time, and just didn't get to read it yet. I'm definitely going to make it a priority to do so, sooner rather than later! πŸ€—
