How do I get motivation to shower?

This is a tough one. I actually gave up pressuring myself to shower years ago. And once I released what I believed were societal norms of showering, I found a shower schedule that worked for me and it makes me feel a lot better! I actually only shower like 3x a week. But it’s not as hard to shower anymore because I’m on a schedule that I feel comfortable with.

I used to have this problem but I began trying different body washes and lotions to add a level of variety and relaxation to it. I love lavender and find it calming so I used a lot of soaps with lavender, also I listen to music, not a specific playlist but whatever seems appropriate for my mood that day. I kind of had to build the shower into a comforting place for myself .

I broke it down by steps: if I was having a really bad day and I was stinky, I'd just stand under the water for a few minutes, on a slightly better day I'd wash my hair, on an even better day, I'd brush my hair and face, and now I'm to the point of doing the whole shower routine. don't try to give yourself too strict of a timeline as mental health fluctuates, but it's always good to work towards a goal :)

I still struggle to shower on a regular basis, I’ve tried different shower schedules and incentives but that never really helped me. I started having my boyfriend remind me every other day. That goes for brushing my hair and teeth. Basic hygiene can be really hard for people struggling with depression, and that’s okay. At one point I’d let it get really bad and shower when I actually felt like I could and wanted to. Most of the time I sit on the floor in the shower and will do a basic wash. If you’re really not sure where to start and don’t think you have the motivation to shower I recommend investing in shower wipes (can buy on Amazon) which you can use to freshen up when you really just can’t push yourself to shower. That helped me a lot when I was at my worst. Hope that helps.

Sometimes for me, it can be as simple as a basic reward incentive for after the shower! A special treat, give my pet a treat, watch a specific show, anything! Some days I even settle for just standing in the water to be honest and I don't stress too much over using soap, even if it's preferred obviously, but just some hot water can feel good and at least rinse away any surface grime!

Usually i try to do something while i shower like play a podcast or show so i dont feel bored or like im wasting time. Theres also wash away crayons for the shower walls! Another thing that can help is getting a shower stool too so you dont have to use energy you dont have by standing.
