Does anyone experience unexpected mutism? where you just suddenly unable to talk and you cant even forcely make yourself talk? like I've always experienced times where im unable to speak and I'd always get made fun of for it so i started forcing myself to speak but today i had to go out to dinner and i completely couldnt speak, i went completely mute because of how anxious i was and my parents made fun of me and that just made it worse. is there a correct term for this? or any advice on how to cope with it?
If it's something that's caused by your anxiety, take a step back and see what's similar about the situations, what triggers might have been present? It also might be your brain's way of forcing you to shut down for a minute, part of self care while having anxiety is making sure you take time in a calming environment to be able to process things at your own speed.
It's selective mutism. I used to go mute a lot as a kid and still do sometimes when I'm really anxious. It's not that I don't want to talk, sometimes I just can't.
