How do you make friends as an autistic person with extreme social anxiety in college?
Making friends was easy in high school because you had to be around the same people in class all the time. Now it's a lot harder. People just think I'm weird.
My boyfriend can't be my only friend because he has his own mental health to take care of and can't be there for me 24/7. That makes for an unhealthy relationship if I'm too dependent on my partner.
I'm trying to use tinder to match with new friends but everyone seems uninterested in me, even when we have common interests.
I don't know what to do and I'm extremely lonely. It's making my depression horribly worse.

i’m in high school (independent studies) and i’m in a very similar situation. i honestly feel so hopeless and i don’t know what to do at all. i try to make friends online because thats all i can do, but people dont seem to like me very much. i know that i’m different in a lot of ways i just don’t understand why people don’t want to be my friend.

maybe try joining a club? that way when you go it will be the same people. maybe if there’s a club similar to your special interest you’ll look forward to going

How do you compose yourself in public settings? If you find yourself withdrawing from people/isolating yourself, then I would find ways to overcome your fears of social interaction. Another option would be to try writing. When I become nonverbal, writing out what I want to say tends to help, and even if it comes off strange, just make it simple. "Hey! You seem cool! Here's my number!" (Or something like that.) If you don't struggle with the talking part, try to find ways to "get yourself involved." Join a club! Attend school events! Try befriending your roommates! Are there any ways for you to immerse yourself at your current setting?

I could try finding a club to join on campus on the nights I'm free. Maybe if I can afford it I've also considered living on campus next semester.

I would recommend it! That way you're exposing yourself to new people! And I see, don't do anything that makes you uncomfortable, but that would be a good idea!

Hey man, if you can't make real life friends in college, there's always the internet. My best friend in the whole world lives 8600 miles away. Literally across the globe. Idk how to make friends in college because I had to drop out, but I didn't have friends in middle school or high school either, so I just turned to my online friends

I have autism and I'm an extrovert with anxiety. Usually to make friends I choose someone who doesn't look intimidating and looks cool or seems to have some type of common interest, usually from a shirt they're wearing. Or even ask them about an interest they seem to have that you don't know about or aren't into yourself. I usually don't do well in big group settings but basically "choosing" a person helps me
