A Little Bit Of A Vent Here I Jus Blew Up At My Brother Because He Said I Have Minor Autism And Cant Understand Why A Puzzle Piece Symbol Is Offensive And Although He Barely Knows Me It Hurts That He Would Shoot Down My Struggles Like That I Mean I Know I Don Look Autistic If You Don Know Me Well But That’s Because I Had To Mask 99% Of My Life So That I Wouldn’t Be Bullied As Much Even Though I Was Still Shunned And OutCasted At School And By My Sperm Donor I Nevr Even Got Diagnosed Till I Was 19 But That Doesn’t Mean A Reason To Discount My Struggles

I blew up with my mum and sister because they were minimising and making fun my diagnosis. It was at an inappropriate timing and I left them teary and sad. I regretted it immediately, but the truth is I couldn't sleep the night before just thinking about it and when they did it again, I just had a mini meltdown... They are good people, possibly on the spectrum themselves, so think everything about me is normal and that I'm the strongest, boldest and sanest person in the family. So my recent diagnosis left them puzzled. My fault for hiding my struggles and masking all the time. I guess that unmasking is going to be a slow painful process for me. Also, in my country there's zero awareness about autistic people who don't have learning disabilities. That doesn't help at all. I'm a female who doesn't look like Rainman or Sheldon, I've always worked, I have some friends and can be very chatty... It's understandable that most lay people would be puzzled by my diagnosis. Good luck getting on better with your brother. In time I think families start to understand and accept us better. At least that's my hope. Stay safe 🙏

You can't have "minor" autism. It's either you have it or you don't. He's wrong to say that. I do believe you have autism though, it takes some time to unmask. The puzzle piece is offensive to many autistics because neurotypicals make it seem like we're something to figure out, a mystery or that we're missing something, but that's not the case. That is why we use the infinite symbol. He needs to do more research about autism before he starts talking about it.

Sometimes, family is less likely to see an autistic person as autistic because of the high likelihood of family history. So they think the behaviors are "normal." Also, people in general don't tend to understand that just because you can function decently doesn't mean you aren't struggling

Maybe try and explain why it's offensive to him. Unfortunately some people just dont get it and dont want to try and understand. This is not ur fault and if they dont want to learn and change then unfortunately its best to just distance yourself and avoid the topics :/

@Exterminator I Sent Him This Later Last Night “I Can See Why You Would See Me As Mildly Autistic I Mean After All You Don See Me Very Often So It Would Be Hard For You To Know How Much I Struggle On A Daily Basis And I Shouldnt Take Offense To That And On The Other Hand I Can See Why You View Puzzle Pieces To Represent Autism As Not Bein Offensive That Bein Said I Should Have Taken A Step Back And Not Let My Emotions Fuel Me To Go On And On About It After You Had Already Suggested Agreein To Disagree Had I Of Done So I Would Have Come To This Realization Sooner”
