I am a sober alcoholic/addict for almost 2 years. I don’t know how else or where else to talk about this, it’s not about substances but I think I’m addicted to self harm. I have had problems with it since I was in elementary school. I’ve just noticed that it has the same traits as addiction, I do it in a fit, feel guilt and shame, say I’ll never do it again, then do it again. I can’t bring this up in the AA meetings I go to. I tried looking for self harm addiction meetings because I know they exist, I couldn’t even find one. I want to find meetings, I don’t need to tell anyone who cares about me that I can’t stop harming myself. I don’t know if anyone can relate to this but if you can or have any experience I need help.

Right there with you. Self-harm was my first addiction as well. Then drink, then drugs. I think they are all related. It's hard to admit to your actions but it can be very helpful. Have you ever tried DBT? It's mighty helpful for addiction in general, at least in my experience.

I look at my self arm as my earliest addiction (head banging and biting since i was 10, cutting since i was 12, THEN coke and heroin ages 17-29. So i feel you. It's what you're covering up with these releases and unhealthy coping mechanisms that is really important.

Groups for self harm or self harm and addiction or just addiction are all good too
I relate with the entire interaction between self harm, addiction, and substance abuse. The truth is that you do need to tell those who care about you that you can't stop and you need help. And they have to listen and help. A relationship is a two way street and letting others help you gives them a chance to be a good person
I have struggled with self harm. You can bring that up with people in AA. It's quite co..on among alcoholics and drug addicts. I have been sober in AA for 20 years.
