For those who have GERD, other than the awful taste and the burning in the throat, how do you know when your reflux is getting out of control? Also, what do you do to gain control back? I am having problems getting control of mine since being on antibiotics several times since October. I never know it's getting bad until it's burning my throat. I would like to know how to prevent it from getting this bad.

@Lauren3311 I've taken a variety of OTCs. Nexium worked best for me, until about 4 months ago. I'm trying Pantoprazole now. It's helping some.

when mine gets bad i have a hard time breathing. i didn’t think that was related for awhile, but my mom informed me recently that it is.

@lamajama wow. I would have never connected that together. Thanks!

I’m on prescription meds that help. i still get it, just not as bad. Drinks are a BIG trigger for me, I really struggle drinking anywhere near enough. I dont actually throw up anywhere near as much as I used too. I prop myself up in bed too, that helps. Try OTC meds, if that doesn’t work, try prescription ones?

I can't eat anything that has even the smallest amount of spiciness including something as basic as pepper (the spice). Nothing with any amount of acidity, like lemon or pasta sauce for example. When I eat pizza I take off the cheese and sauce, and it still aggravates it a little. I've tried meds like Nexium, Zantac, and Prevacid. I've had the most success with Pantoprazole, which I take daily, and Reglan when I get nauseous. I don't have any secrets to know when it's coming on, I've just learned over the years what triggers it. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

@Raquel226 thank you! I am trying Pantoprazole. So far it's helped, but still having some problems. I'm able to eat more than soup at least. Waiting on a referral to a GI to go through. Maybe my hernia got bigger? My whole left side, especially under my ribs hurt after eating. 🤷‍♀️

Avoid spicy foods, don't eat 2 hours before bed, chat with your doc. Some GERD can be handled with otc meds, some need rx. Tums are your friend unless you have kidney issues.

@Magpie42 I don't eat spicy at all. I keep acidic foods to a minimum. Right now, I'm at the point where I'm only eating broth-type soups with crackers. Everything else flares it up.

@Magpie42 I do all of that. I don't eat chocolate or ice cream, as those aggravate it. I don't recognize any symptoms other than the burning and taste. Sometimes a sour stomach. What other symptoms should I look for?
