I've had a hoarder style depression room my entire life, I'm never really fully able to clean it. I usually try to clean in small bits and take it slowly. Sometimes I just set a minute timer on my phone and just do everything I can in that minute. Then I'm done for the day if I feel that's all I can do. Also cleaning the parts that affect others, like shared dishes, helps me to feel less guilty about the whole thing.
I always go by what’s most important to clear out. Always grab a trash bag and get any trash in the room out right away. Then I would put all laundry in a pile to start going through that stuff over the next week. I always notice that if I have a clean table even just 1 it helps clear my mind a little even if the floor is still dirty so I try to do that. I try to sanitize what I can. Everything else is clutter. At least the room is clean it just has some stuff to organize now so I just put everything into one big bucket or laundry basket and work through putting a little bit of it away each day until i empty the bucket. That way you have a “clean” room instantly and can maybe get the energy to finish organize because of that too.
I agree with Blue. It also helps to do one task at a time. If you don’t want to go by color go by category: clothes, books, desk, etc… Make realistic goals. Even if you just do one thing. That’s good enough.
I also put on music which sets a mood. It allows me to go into my own world while I do the mindless task of straightening up.
I do the music thing also helps a lot I make 2 dirty piles whites and colors hang up or fold and put up what I can. Blankets and jackets I fold or hang up as I coke across them. Tomorrow I'm going thru as much of the clothing as I can getting ready for yard sale. That will help with my hoard/clutter of a room. I haven't even slept in there in 2 maybe 3 months and I need to get to where I can asap
I set a timer for 30 min, put my music on and get whatever I can done. Even if it's not finished, something is better than nothing and you feel better that you accomplished it
