Dealing with a Relationship Break

I’ve been having a difficult time. For the past three months I was in a relationship, we both had a deep connection and cared for each other a lot. Yesterday, he said he needed to step back for a while to figure stuff out in his life and that it wasn’t the right time for him to be committed. He said it was nothing to do with me, and made that very clear. He said he will check back in with me “every now and then” but also told me multiple times that he would “be back for me” and that he would “be back soon i promise”, and he never promises. He said he needed a little time to figure out his life and do soul searching. I guess what hurts is that I imagined him in my future and I think he did too, he just doesn’t know where he’s going. We also have a bit of distance between us right now, we live a little over an hour away, and that has been affecting him too he said. He said that I make him “extremely happy”, but he knows in his heart that the break is the right thing. What I’m worried about is how long this break will last or if he will come back to me, especially since he said he promises he will come back. I’m giving him his space, it’s just really hard not to think of worst case scenario for me (i have bad anxiety and OCD). We have both said that we are right for each other, but I’m thinking it’s the wrong time. I just want him, I can’t imagine my life with anyone else. I already miss him so much, but I want him to be okay and happy and healthy first. I guess I’m just anxious to know if we have a future and I don’t know what to make of it…😔
