Will be going to the ER for the first time this month today. Not only do I hate doctors but I am ashamed that I have to leave work. I’m upset with myself for not being “normal” and dang it right now I’m angry. I feel so angry at myself for something I can’t control. How do you get out of the dumps when sucked into the invasive thoughts towards your disability?

      You’re taking care of yourself, and that’s something to be proud of. You aren’t waiting until you have to be taken to the ER, you’re understanding your body’s signals and going under your own power. What has really helped me is using my disability to help others find their power. Since my disability is more visible at times (braces, cane days, weird sitting positions), I let myself be seen. When I’m having hard days, I’m honest with coworkers and I encourage them to let me know when they could use support too. I wouldn’t be able to do that as well without my disability. I can help people feel comfortable letting their pain and needs be known by showing my own. It’s also completely valid to be angry and frustrated and annoyed that society expects the same from everyone. But try to turn those feelings outward, not inward. You live in a world of, frankly, unrealistic expectations. That’s why even the heartiest experience burnout on a regular basis and “working for the weekend” is something people immediately identify with. Your body is asking for help and rest and you’re giving it that, which is kind and takes courage to stand against society to say “I am going to listen to my body, not your expectation.” When you can handle it, try to find a hobby that your body is really happy with, whether it’s reading, crafting, documenting nature, making up new trail mix flavors, whatever. When you have something you can do often you’ll feel less frustrated at the things that are less compatible with your body. Sending good vibes and gentle hugs
