I hesitated to add bipolar disorder to my profile because it's something I've only so far briefly discussed with my psychiatrist, and I haven't been formally diagnosed. But it does seem to make sense. I tend to live in manic/depressive streaks. I'm a novelist, and I will go weeks or months where I'm writing, writing, writing, it's all I think about or want to do, it's almost obsessive. Then suddenly, all interest is lost and I don't return to it for weeks or months. There are other interests and areas of my life where I run like this. It also explains why the lightweight medications that barely worked for a long time suddenly weren't cutting it anymore. I went from an antidepressant/anti-anxiety regimen to a brand new antidepressant/anti-anxiety/double antipsychotic regimen, following a full-on mental breakdown. Is there anyone out there with experience with BPD who can tell me if my doctor and I are on the right track?

Your psychiatrist will have your best interests at heart and is the best qualified to diagnose, so you just have to have that trust in them. If the introduction of antipsychotic medication has made a difference then I would say so yes. In time you should level out to being stable and learn what your triggers are and then come up with a plan, to help you, help you. I've been diagnosed nearly 5 years now, so am here for advice any time you need. It's a difficult one in that we all present differently. It's a lot about learning more about how you react to this illness, but you are not alone x
