Hey my name is Maddie, I have had ADHD my entire life but my family refuses to take any medication so I basically have to learn how to deal with it(not working) bc it got worse in high school. My anxiety I was told by my doctor comes from untreated ADHD but my anxiety didn’t get that bad until I came out as bi to my family (I am a lesbian but can’t tell them) I basically spend all day everyday trying to convince myself that I will make it another day cause life’s pretty shitty rn lmao

if your adhd is making it hard to do homework, try body doubling (working on something with another person who is also working on their own thing. it works good but you gotta make sure that the other person will actually work and not distract you). setting deadlines for yourself and having a buddy to help enforce them also works for me. it gives you that same boost of focus/energy as you do when you procrastinate til the actual one, but then you don’t have to do it all then! i tend to do it by making plans with a friend, and them knowing that i cant go to the plans unless i finish x amount of the homework. eating and sleeping enough & on a regular schedule will help with focus in class too. absentminded doodling, and general fidgeting helps me listen/focus in class also. try to find one that doesn’t disturb others (so ones that are silent). if you know a teacher will actually listen/be receptive, let them know that you’re working on coping with your problems focusing. you don’t have to call it ADHD if you don’t want to, just letting them know the specific things you’re struggling with and the things you’re trying out to make it better will allow them to help/accommodate you better. i went through all of high school undiagnosed/unmedicated, and so i know how difficult it is, but i know you can do this! i hope your situation with your sexual orientation/your family can be clarified, or at least become less anxiety inducing. i’m also queer, and coming out is so hard, and a long process. just remember you have a lot of people who will/do support you :)

Thank you I have supportive friends just not really a supportive family which isn’t something I can change
It sounds like you live in a toxic environment. If you are able to go to therapy I highly suggest it. Some people do great without meds some don't. Dealing with ADHD is difficult especially when compounded by all of the struggles of life in general. Getting to a point where life doesn't feel miserable is a difficult road, and even harder if you have adhd, And surounding yourself with supportive people in my opinion is the most important part
Are you able to see a therapist? They might be able to help you with skills to help manage ADHD better. If you can, try looking for someone that specializes in ADHD.
Thank you I’ll try it!
I heard that running was a really good way to help ADHD and when I did track in school I felt a lot better.
Yea I am a caffeine addict at this point I need it to get through my day and I also asked for therapy and my mom told me it wasn’t a real problem and I just need to learn to deal like everyone else even tho my doctor suggested treatment
Man, that sucks. Before my ADHD was treated, I used to get by on caffeine. I don't know if I'd recommend it necessarily, but it definitely made me realize that I needed a stimulant to function like my neurotypical peers! For reference, I am a minor and have had a long, hard fight towards being medicated. Don't give up!
