Does anyone have tips for mesalamine enemas? I just got prescribed to do them nightly, and I don’t understand how they expect anyone to do this every night, “directly after a bowel movement”, and lay in that position for 30 minutes just to HOPE it stays in. Tips???? Does it come out while you sleep? Frustrated. Sad.

They are rough to do every night. For me they sometimes come out and sometimes stay in. Make sure you get as little air pushed into your colon as possible when squirting it in

First, make sure it is room temp and not cold. I used to hold mine in my hands or gently under my arm. Second, have a warm heating pad draped across your abdomen (not too hot to burn your skin, though); it helps relax your abdominal muscles and intestines. Third, your enema might have a rubber seal attaching the nozzle to the bottle. Keeping the plastic lid on the top of the nozzle, pull on the edge of the rubber seal to slightly open the enema, and VERY gently, barely squeeze the enema so that the small amount of air in the bottle escapes, then quickly release the rubber seal so that it snaps back in place. The enema will look slightly deflated. I found that removing the air greatly helped me tolerate it. Fourth, lie on your left side and stay there for 10-15 minutes after administering the enema. Listen to music, a podcast, etc to distract you. Fifth, SLOWLY administer the enema…barely squeeze it from the bottom up, like you’re giving little “sips”; this helps prevent that sudden urge to poop after quickly giving yourself an enema. Despite all of these techniques, sometimes I could only tolerate half an enema, which is better than using the whole thing but having to lose it in the toilet.

something i learned the hard way is to get the air out of the bottle FIRST. when i was doing them i’d lay a towel on my bed and just hold it in for as long as i possibly could. i would recommend putting some padding in your underwear while you sleep in case anything leaks out, but it usually all comes out when you expel it

I wear underwear when I use it, but yes they’ve told me I have to do it every night. It got me out of my flare but I refuse to make it my maintenance medication bc 1) it ruined my *spicy* life because you just...leak grease..and 2) because it hurt my kidneys after a few month of time (that’s just me tho may work for you!) however it did get me to stop bleeding, so it was worth it if you’re flaring IMO, I just have mild UC and am not willing to do it everyday
