so I was going to stay self-diagnosed but my mom recently suggested that there may be a benefit or two to me getting diagnosed with ASD. so as excited as I am to bring it up to my doc at my next appointment, I'm worried either she'll say smth stupid and disappointing or that my insurance won't cover adult autism assessments or that the assessor will be ignorant. also, am I supposed to make lists and charts and stuff? I feel like I should but it meant nothing when I went for my ADHD eval. like. i can say with 98% certainty (no more or less) that i'm autistic. but that doesn't mean the first eval will say so. and i'm genuinely a little nervous now. but then, it could take a few months. i probably have time.

Not being believed by doctors is so painful. I hope it all goes smoothly for you!!! I’m still not sure if I want to go through the process of being diagnosed

@Louva_bug same tbh. My mom is talking about asking my doc at my next appointment to see if she thinks it would be beneficial. I'm mostly okay with being self-diagnosed anyway, but it would take away the remaining uncertainty, for me, to have it confirmed.

I tried to get assessed and was told because I was married, had an "average number of sexual partners for my age" apparently one partner at 23 is average which isn't statistically true but whatever doc, and wouldn't hold my arm in ice for a long time they wouldn't even evaluate me for autism. My therapist and one other doctor I interact with regularly for two years agree I'm autistic so I'm comfortable using the lablel. I also know living my life as a person who believes theyre autistic has made my life better. So I guess do the benefits outweigh the possible struggle and invalidation you may receive? If so go for it, if not self diagnosis hurts no one and helps you. I get a couple work accommodations and no one has asked for proof of diagnosis.
